Reflections of last weeks class

I found the class last week to be interesting. I was expecting for the Physics class to be more math based but I think we will probably learn more intellectually if we have discussions and not only do equations. The comparison of time between American/N. Europeans and Latin America/Middl East was interesting to me. I can definitely see how I fall into the Western category in this area. I tend to be very prompt and can be obsessive in having everything scheduled. I liked the idea of having wider knowledge in different areas then being too specific. One of the things we talked about was in Western Medicine we can almost be too specialized. In my experience even the people that are so specialized in an area still cannot always get down to the cause of the problem. I would like to be able to have my hands in a lot of different aspects and be able to treat the body all over. I like seeing the comparisons of Eastern and Western. It is helpful to see the difference in view points and how they do things. This is good for us to see to determine if we would rather the Eastern approach then the Western approach. It proves to me more and more I am like the Eastern approach better.

  1. The western way of specializing in the medical field can be extremely limiting. I have a client who is a western doctor and used to work in occupational medicine. If someone came in to see her with pain in their wrist, she was only allowed to treat the wrist and couldn't look into problems in the joint above or below the pain. In that way the "over specialization" becomes ineffective. Its wonderful that Chinese Medicine has a more rounded view.
